Governor Brown to speak
today at PTA convention

112th annual event focuses on the future of California's children

LONG BEACH - Governor Jerry Brown will address the opening meeting of the California State PTA's 112th Annual Convention this afternoon in the Long Beach Convention Center. Several thousand PTA members and delegates are expected to attend this major yearly event for the state's largest association working to ensure the well-being of all children and youth.

WHAT: Governor Brown to address First General Meeting of the 112th Annual Convention of the California State PTA
WHEN: 4:30 p.m. today, Thursday, April 28
WHERE: Long Beach Convention Center
PRESS AVAILABILITY: Before and after the Governor's presentation, PTA members will be available to speak about the impact of state budget cuts in their communities. Details will be provided to press on location.

"Hearing from the Governor will be an inspiring start to our convention, where we gather to renew our commitment and passion, celebrate our successes, and make plans to do even more to help all the children of California," said Jo A.S. Loss, president of the California State PTA. "Our nearly 1 million members have said loudly and clearly that adequate school funding is their top priority. They are deeply concerned about the massive budget cuts that education and children's programs have already absorbed in the past few years. We look forward to hearing from the Governor and appreciate his leadership in pushing for a balanced budget solution that will prevent deeper cuts that would affect children."

The PTA annual convention is the premier training event, and much more, for the association, which has nearly 1 million members throughout the state. In addition to having more than 80 workshops to choose from, attendees will hear inspiring speakers, honor those who have made a real difference in the lives of children, peruse hundreds of exhibitors' displays, and debate and vote on resolutions that will guide the association's work.

The convention is the place to get up to speed on children's issues in California, from the impact of the state budget, parent involvement, school reform, healthy eating and arts education to bullying prevention, driver training and social networking. To learn more about the schedule as you plan your coverage, please review the Convention Registration Book.
